Ultrasounds Q & A

What are ultrasounds?

Ultrasounds are one of the in-office procedures available at BABIES ETC OB/GYN P.C. The full-service obstetrics and gynecology practice manages women’s health throughout every stage of their life, from her first period, through every pregnancy, up through menopause and beyond.

The team uses the in-office ultrasound to diagnose gynecological conditions and monitor you and your baby during pregnancy. Ultrasounds use sound wave technology to generate live-action images of your internal organs. It’s a safe, painless, noninvasive imaging test.

The BABIES ETC OB/GYN P.C. team may use one of two types of ultrasounds to evaluate your reproductive organs, including:

Transabdominal ultrasound

During a transabdominal ultrasound, the technician glides the ultrasound wand (transducer) over your abdomen to generate images of your lower abdominal organs.

Transvaginal ultrasound

During a transvaginal ultrasound, the technician uses a special transducer they insert in your vagina. Dr. Sylvester may request a transvaginal ultrasound so she can examine your reproductive organs more closely.

When do I need gynecological ultrasounds?

Dr. Sylvester may recommend a gynecological ultrasound to find the underlying cause of your pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding. An ultrasound may help her diagnose:

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Fibroids or polyps
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Pelvic infections
  • Uterine or ovarian cancer
  • Ectopic pregnancy

The ultrasound also allows her to evaluate the structure of your reproductive organs to look for abnormalities that may explain your infertility.

When do I need pregnancy ultrasounds?

There are many times throughout your pregnancy when the team may perform ultrasounds. For example, Dr. Sylvester may request an ultrasound at your first pregnancy care appointment to confirm pregnancy, help estimate your due date, examine your uterus, and locate your placenta.

The team also performs pregnancy ultrasounds between weeks 18 and 20 of your pregnancy. During this ultrasound, the team evaluates your baby and your uterus.

Dr. Sylvester may also perform ultrasounds during your pregnancy, such as the nuchal translucency test (NTT) to screen for chromosomal abnormalities and the nonstress test (NST) to assess your baby’s health.

BABIES ETC OB/GYN P.C. offers 3D and 4D ultrasounds during pregnancy, creating detailed images and videos of your baby.
